Shedding light on how one of the world’s most influential religions views one of the world’s oldest institutions, this study examines marriage in the context of Islamic tradition and describes the beliefs that guide the behavior of spouses toward each other. Several examples of the importance of marriage within the Islamic framework are presented, such as the way Islam facilitated marriage, reducing the requirements of formality and easing the economic burden; the way the Prophet Muhammad encouraged Muslims to marry—even those who had rejected marriage and family to devote themselves to God; the manner in which the Prophet attempted to resolve conflicts within families to ensure the survival of peace within the family; and the way the Qur'an requires assistance for those who wish to marry but cannot due to economic or moral obstacles.
